Madder is a perennial plant, the roots of which are used as a natural dye. giving a red pigment. It dies back in the winter and shoots re-emerge in early Spring. The plant grows a stronger root system each year; it will typically take at least 2 further years before being able to take a crop of roots, leaving longer will give a better crop.

The plants grow long root systems and new plants may emerge some 3 foot away from the original plant - these plants can be weeded out or can be divided to create new plants. A relation to cleavers, the top growth is scrambly (around 3 foot) and a little sticky, it will attach to neighbouring plants; providing small support systems (stick wig-wams?) will improve its attractiveness in the garden. It may flower in summer with clouds of tiny yellow flowers.

Earthed Up! is a workers co-operative based in Belper. We grow all our own plants, peat free, without harmful chemicals. We also deliver peat free composts and are starting to offer courses this year. www.earthedup.com
