Symphytum x uplandicum

Comfrey grows fast, with large leaves. This variety was bred in Essex to be sterile, so it doesn't self-seed over your garden. The leaves can be used to make liquid plant food, as a compost activator, or left to flower for the bees who adore it.

"Comfrey is rich in potassium (K), which is required for fruit production, and also contains potash (P) and nitrogen (N). A liquid comfrey feed has a higher NPK ratio than farmyard manure. Comfrey is also one of the few plants to contain vitamin B12, so it's a rich source of food for plants." Alys Fowler, Guardian.

The root cuttings should simply be placed in pots of free-draining compost (we advocate peat-free); they will form smaller roots and send up the first leaves by late Spring. At this point, plant out into its final position.

Earthed Up! is a workers co-operative based in Belper. We grow all our own plants, peat free, without harmful chemicals. We also deliver peat free composts and are starting to offer courses this year. www.earthedup.com
